Write a proper enquiry

Send the drawing or model, material specification, quantity, tolerance, finish, packaging and delivery requirement as a single package.

Audit capability, not certificates

Ask which machines the work will run on, what the inspection equipment is, and for a measurement report on a similar part.

For CMM inspection, the practical question is whether the supplier can demonstrate measurement uncertainty around 2 to 3 micrometres in a controlled room on a part like yours.

Samples and first article

Approve a first article with a full dimensional report, material certificate and photographs before releasing a production batch.

Keep the approved sample and report as the reference for every future reorder.

Commercial terms

Agree Incoterms, payment structure, tooling or fixture ownership, and what happens if the drawing changes after tooling has been cut.

Agree the over and under delivery allowance as well, because production quantities rarely land exactly on the order figure.

Logistics, packaging and aftercare

Specify packing that survives sea freight, corrosion protection for bare metal, and labelling that matches your goods-in process.

Ask how non-conformances are handled before you need the answer, because that response tells you more about a supplier than any brochure.
