Define the characteristic first

Quality starts on the drawing: every critical characteristic needs a size, a tolerance and a datum structure that a machinist can actually work to.

Where the drawing is ambiguous, the shop and the customer will measure different things and both will be right.

In-process checks

Operators should measure the first part, a part in the middle of the batch and the last part, using gauges that are calibrated and appropriate for the tolerance.

For CNC bending, in-process measurement is what allows bend angles within plus or minus 0.5 degrees and leg lengths within 0.2 mm to be maintained without stopping production.

Final inspection and CMM

Final inspection should cover the characteristics that could not be checked on the machine, with a report that references the drawing and the measurement method.

Measurement uncertainty matters: a gauge capable of 0.02 mm cannot prove a 0.005 mm requirement.

Documentation and traceability

Inspection records, material certificates and, where agreed, first article reports turn a delivery into a defensible one.

Traceability by batch or serial number is now expected in aerospace, medical and automotive work.

Tighten where it counts

Holding every dimension to the tightest value on the drawing is expensive, and the cost is usually invisible until a quotation is compared with a competitor's.

Agree with the customer which characteristics are functional and relax the rest.
